Our Reason

Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Nigeria were established to provide temporary shelter and humanitarian assistance to people forced to flee their homes due to conflict, violence, insecurity, and natural disasters while remaining within the country. The Boko Haram insurgency, which began in 2009, is the primary cause of internal displacement, particularly in Borno, Adamawa, and yobe States. Other major causes include farmer-herder clashes, armed banditry, kidnapping, and seasonal flooding. IDP camps provide essential services such as shelter, food, clean water, healthcare, sanitation, education, and psychological support. However, many camps face challenges including overcrowding, inadequate funding, poor sanitation, limited healthcare, and security concerns. While these camps offer vital relief, lasting solutions require addressing the root causes of displacement through improved security, peacebuildning, reconstruction, and sustainable development.
